Sometimes I hear the question, "Why should a person do karate?" This is certainly a valid question, but it has many correct answers...
I think many people initially start karate because of a notion that they've gotten in their head from watching MMA fights or ninja movies. They imagine themselves as possibly becoming some type of ultimate fighter because of their training. However, we can say that there are four basic categories in life that karate can benefit a person.
First, is obviously self-defense. It has been said, "Nobody wants to fight, but you need to know how." Unfortunately, we may all find ourselves in a situation where somebody wants to do us harm. We must know how to respond and be ready to respond to aggression when it comes. Karate teaches many ways to use the body for defense. The response can be modified to use as much or as little force as may be required.
Second, many people enjoy the competitive aspect of the martial arts. Whether you want to engage in fighting or performance routines, karate provides an excellent social outlet for competing and associating with others in a team or individual setting.
Third, karate is wonderful training for the body in terms of movement, coordination, balance and overall physical fitness. Few activities involve the entire body to the degree that traditional karate practice does. At any age, a person can continue to move and stay active while still tailoring their level of activity to match their own personal capabilities and limitations.
Finally, karate allows for a type of mind/body connection that can be healthy and healing for the development of the spirit. In much the same way that yoga and certain types of dance, captivate the viewer and the participants, karate is a type of "moving meditation" the offers advantages in and out of the dojo. We often see students develop greater discipline and self-control, increased concentration and a calmer demeanor. More advanced students will often talk about how karate affects their confidence, interpersonal relationships, and inner peace.
No matter what you hope to gain when you walk into the dojo, you will not get there without that first step. Commit to investigate what karate has to offer and come train with us!
